street theatre
Street Theatre is low-key and low-commitment way for Stone Soup to meet new artists, work on new ideas in a public setting, and have a generally good time.
Here's a sampling of projects we've done in the past...
flocking
A basic form of street theatre. It involves listening to each other and to an environment and following the movements of ever-changing leaders, like a flock of birds. We've flocked subways, streets, shops and even the Staten Island Ferry. Advanced flockers head to the Gap and Banana Republic for a more politically-minded project.
advice five cents
This project is just like it sounds- we go in teams of two to various parts of the city and offer 5-cent advice to anyone who happens by our stools. Always fun and definitely interesting- we head out on weekends in hopes of catching the bar crowd.
leapfrog poem
We pick up chalk, then create a number of surrealist poems stretching over several blocks. Each person involved writes a line, then moves to the next corner to add onto another person's poem. We meet up on the last corner for a reading.
we relax for you
We meet on a sidewalk in midtown to set up a relaxing service for the busy business people who pass through the area. We lay around and read a book or newspaper, play a game or simply sleep for our clients.
romantic comedy marathon
We stage the end of a romantic comedy at various locations throughout the city. We use a volunteer bride and groom, after that the only assignment is to be one of the wacky cast of characters- a crazy friend, the drunken priest, the voodoo-practicing aunt- think of the movies you've seen and be creative. Don't worry, nothing but happy endings for our romantic comedy couples.
blank canvas
We pick up the blank sandwich boards and boxes of pens. In teams of one canvas and one handler, we dispatch to different parts of the city to ask passers-by to write or draw on the boards. We meet to view the boards, then post them around the city.
soapbox
We return to the park to relax as part of a free audience for all who want to perform or simply vent. We set up a soapbox and gather as the audience to listen to, boo, or applaud whatever passers-by have to say.
different couples fight
Three different sets of couples learn the same script to a fight then disperse in a public space to stage it in various locations.
busking bonanza
During past summers, we have performed short theatre pieces or previews of our plays during this outdoor festival of Off-Off Broadway Theatre Companies.
